We are looking forward to Gyllian’s next tapestry weaving course, scheduled to take place on 7th February at Gracefield. Places for this workshop are still available.
Gyllian graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in textiles with a first class degree in Tapestry weaving, with a secondary subject in printmaking. She then went on to Glasgow University to do her postgraduate degree in teaching training as an art and design teacher. Her teaching career took her into over 40 different schools in Scotland. However, Gyllian ‘s first love was always weaving. Fortunately, the opportunity came to return to it a few years ago when she and her family relocated to the village of Thornhill. She set up her own studio there where she works now full-time as a professional tapestry weaver, designing and weaving her own superb rugs and tapestries. Gyllian is a regular participant in Spring Fling, the major open studios event in Dumfries and Galloway . She also exhibits widely at many of the principle Art shows in Scotland. Gyllian serves on the DAGFAS committee, where her background and training in the Arts brings a professional edge to all the projects she is involved with. We are very glad to welcome Gyllian back to Gracefield in February to continue her inspiring workshops.
Tapestry Weaving Class 7th February 10-4 Gracefield Arts Centre Dumfries
This class is at intermediate level, but can also suit a beginner if they have woven before. The programme will involve creating a simple design/painting then weaving a part or all of this creation onto small wooden looms. The process demonstrates the way Gyllian was taught to weave at Art School, and currently employs when making and creating her own tapestries.
Gyllian says that all materials will be provided and all the looms will be warped up and knotted ready to go. The workshop will run from 10-4, with time for lunch half-way through. A couple of hours in the morning will be dedicated to painting and designing, with more time in the afternoon to start and hopefully finish a small weaving. She adds “ We’ll be using all sorts of yarns and will provide enough for the class. But feel free to bring your own if you have certain colours you want to use. Also please bring along a photo, painting, or magazine cut out of what will inspire you to paint. It’s always best to keep it as simple as possible as weaving an image can take time.
Hopefully, if we have time, I will be able to knot the top for you so you can take your work away on the day. “
