Gary is a very talented artist member of DAGFAS and is also an active member , regularly helping out with the hanging of many of our exhibitions . He has just been elected as an associate member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art and in three years time will be elected as a full member.
Artists who have influenced him include Lucian Freud, Euan Uglow and Caravaggio, but there are many more and he also possesses keen observational skills. You may have seen Gary’s marvellous paintings over the years. He is a valued member of DAGFAS and a deep thinker. His painting ‘The Secret History’ is on show at our Summer Exhibition at Gracefield and his drawings are superb as you can see. Acceptance as an associate member to the SGFA is an exacting process, with many sketchbooks and drawings required for submission in advance and which are examined thoroughly by the ASGFA panel. The process has involved years of dedication and hard work and Gary’s election as an associate member is a testament to his efforts and professional approach.
‘Every artist should be able to paint anything, but over time we all usually become involved in an area that intrigues or attracts us most. My area is the human form, be it either as a portrait or figurative. The journey of an artist never ends and the secrets that unfold in time are worth waiting for. When I undertake a portrait commission the essence of the subject has to be captured, and I think this is down to being aware of the very subtle actions and expressions that make each person unique. At times this almost seems like an invisible element, but it is there. Time and observation reveal all.’
