We are delighted that Sam has joined the Society – and furthermore has agreed to do a practical day’s teaching for us in portraiture in Moffat Town Hall on Thursday 7th November from 10am to 4pm.
This will be a great opportunity to learn from an expert how to approach painting a portrait in oil. Model(s) will be provided.
Please bring your own materials. Parking is available in the Main Street. There are several disabled parking spaces outside the Town Hall and the premises is all on ground level with good access. If you need help to access the building then please phone 07957 836509.
Bring your own refreshments if you wish, but Moffat is well provided with cafés and one of these ‘The Rumblin’ Tum’ is located right opposite the Town Hall. There will be an hour for lunch at 12 noon, with short breaks every 45mins or so during the class.
Sam recommends that students bring the following on the day:
Easel ( if a problem – some will be available. Let us know if you require one)
Small primed panel/canvas, (30x25cm is about the size required) with a very, very dilute wash of a ground colour across it.
Paint rags.
Small tins/jars for solvent.
Sansodor odourless solvent for cleaning brushes.
Linseed oil, small amount.
Selection of brushes, big and small, filberts, flats and rounds.
Palette.
Palette knife for mixing paint.
Oil Paints, suggested palette:
Titanium White.
Lemon Yellow. A ‘cool’ yellow that mixes well to turquoise and green
Cadmium Yellow Deep. A ‘warm’ yellow that mixes well to orange
Venetian Red. A ‘warm’ red, that mixes well to earthen orange
Quinacridone Crimson. A ‘cool’ red that mixes well towards purple
Cobalt Blue. A blue that can mix to greens or purples.
During the day you will :
1. Learn to design and compose your portrait.
2. Learn how to start a portrait painting in a monochrome, to better understand the tonal values. Form and tone can be settled before colour is even a consideration.
3. Learn how to mix your palette in a way that helps you understand the colours before you start throwing any paint at the surface.
4. Learn how to apply colour in an organised way that still allows you to be spontaneous.
Looks like a great day to learn .
All abilities are welcome.
