Mixed Media Inspired by the Natural World

Saturday 19th June 2027
Gracefield Art Centre, Dumfries, DG1 1JQ

Workshop Topic
Creating rich and layered texture using and making natural art materials. A mixed media workshop influenced by, and crafting with, the natural world.

In this workshop you will learn how to create mixed-media and layered artwork, exploring line, texture, pattern and colour using high quality natural art materials, some of which we will create during the workshop and some which will be brought from Old Mill Arts extensive art material collection. The focus of the workshop will be to explore the vast creative potential of these natural art materials, and to experience first hand, their naturally harmonious colour palettes and abundant nature.

What we will do
The workshop will run from 10.00 until 4.00 with a hour for lunch.

Using Old Mill Arts collection of pigments, binders, inks and fibres, you will experience making your own palette of colours to use during the workshop. You will then be led through effective but simple drawing techniques to explore line and will develop your own themes to work with within the session.

We will then look at techniques in building up layers using inks, paints, handmade papers and natural textures giving you the chance to experience the qualities of the natural art materials and explore creativity working with them.

The day will be based around finding and exploring themes you wish to work with, using and developing creative languages with a wide range of effective hand made materials not found in art supplies shops and playfully engaging in layering of textures, adding and taking away to build up your own pieces to continue working on at home, or even to frame!

At the end of the workshop
You will have had an in depth experience of the potential of high quality, hand crafted art supplies, as well as learning various techniques in building up form and texture. By using natural colour alongside modern pigments, you will experience how to harmonise and use a balanced palette for mixed media.
